Working as a Network Consultant, occasionally I have clients that are in Research and Development, as such I might have to sign Non Disclosure Agreement. Which basically means they are working on something secret and you can't talk about it. So obviously that's not what this post is about.
So let's say you are an alternative/goth/punk/scene chick. And you are hot. And you work at one of these places. And you are an Engineer.
You are, a nerd fantasy. Like the embodiment of what a nerd would want. At this point you either need to find a good nerd to embrace, or fucking avoid them all together.
Just a thought. Also my personal blog got updated, tonight as well.

BSD Punk Band
BSD(Burn subvert Destroy) has nothing to do with the operating system, however they do have to do with some kick ass punk. I noticed about 6 months ago when I got a myspace for the blog and saw that http://myspace.com/bsdpunk was taken. I was talking to a friend this morning and remembered them so I cranked it up, because it isn't awkward enough with the new roomies yet that I have to blair punk music on a frickin' Sunday morning. There main myspace page is a bit better. So check out BURN SUBVERT AND DESTROY. Also following them around the intarweb, it looks like I ran into quite an interesting DIY Music site.

Link exchange with sup3r501d13r
You may have noticed that the Other Sites Of interest tab on the side of the blog just got some new editions. I did a link exchange with a friend. The reason being is I was setting in an irc channel and he posted sexyscenegirls.blogspot.com, and I was like, that BASTARD, what an awesome idea for a traffic driving blog. Well certain there was something I could do to get my link up there, so we agreed on a link exchange. It turns out he has a couple of neat things going on. They also have a myspace, and I put them as a top friend on mine. And of course one last pimp for my scene girls.

Proof good shit isn't always pretty
The perfect aesthetic appeal desired in the corporate world has always pissed me off. Computers are full of cables and wires with PCB's and they are sloppy give it a rest. Anyway while I was seeing if I was ranked on google for hacker punk I came across a web page that wasn't all prettied up but I liked it.

DIY "We are the strange" And other culture
Ok so I already plugged "we are the strange", but I think I want to solidify the diy spirit of the movie. Again when I think of the hacker movement or the punk movement it's diy that rings so true about both. It's the I can do this myself, bust my face, spend to long thinking about how it works or I can throw money at it. Fuck that, let's buss some hea's.

I registered a channel in IRC
I registered an IRC channel on the chat4all.org servers:
http://www.chat4all.org/
You will have to point your client at them, the name of the room is #computer-punks.
Their isn't a lot of traffic right now but maybe in the future. I guess I should, say it's just me and one other guy.

We are the strange
It was fun, it was stupid, it was great.
It was the most visually and aurally appealing movie I have seen in a while. It was, I think like watching the ramones for the first time they appeared. Seeing them appear on stage try to perform a song then just throw their instruments down, then eventually come back and finish their set. Yeah every watcher laughed but at the same time they knew their album collection was obsolete.

Oh yeah 5 points if you decrypt my cisco password
5 points to anyone who cracks, the cisco password on the post before this, and potentially a free BSD Punk shirt if I ever get any made...(get it, FreeBSD shirt). Yeah so I guess I should put like a date limit down in case a shit ton of people crack it, so how about March 1st. And if no one get's it by then, then the winner is the first one to get it.

The punk scene, The open source scene, a comparison
Maybe on the top these are to unlikely candidates to compare as an equal, but really the spirit of both is the same. The true spirit is the same, the balls to the walls, diy duct tape and deal with it. I would call them the two biggest scene proponents of diy. The is feeling of animus, a sort of primal scream of "If I can't do it, it can't be done." You have two groups of people innovating when vast amounts of money were required to innovate, and they had none. In the punk scene you have people like Emmerson Lake and Palmer with 7 minute technical solos, the kind of practice and skill to perform these songs requiring vast amount of time to acquire. But suddenly some "punks" would get on stage and thrash about wildly, hit a lot of wrong notes and finish a song under two minutes, and it was almost a joke, but you had a feeling your record collection was obsolete. Now you have programmers, making solutions for free on the same problems software companies are throwing gobs of money at to fix.
Sure both groups have their internal quibbles, did the punk scene start in the US with the Ramones or the UK with the Sex Pistols? GNU or BSD License? But fundamentally the DIY spirit is still there.
