Yesterday I turned on my new laptop as I have every day for the past week. And I connected to the wireless at work, which is draft n and pretty sweet. I had to type in the WPA key as I had not connected to this particular network. I adjusted my torrent download and upload limits through the GUI, then I decided that I was going to get all the perl modules my work computer had on my laptop. So I opened a terminal window and typed: sudo cpan, typed in my password and started pulling the packages down. After that I exited out of cpan and through a perl script I had made for irssi. I decided I needed to update my resume, something I do everytime I get a new job, because I don't want to freak out if I don't survive the probation period. So I opened up word and made the new entry in my resume. Oh shi--- What the fuck you can't run Word in *nix. Maybe through wine (you are googling aren't you)? Or in a VM. Nope I got a mac. And hopefully this post broke some ideas you had about them. Through and through the kernal of a mac is darwin which sure enough is a BSD. Sorry if you don't think so, but it's true. So :p

stupid nix trix: simple stupid ssh piping
I am going to start a feature called stupid nix trix, that will be one liner helpful commands that you can do on *nix ( unix, linux, mac ) machines.
So let's say you have a file on your home nix machine and you need it on your server, well if ssh is enabled on that server you don't need to break open filezilla just to sftp that file across, you can do it in one line:
Hypothetical:
cat /orignalDir/filename | ssh usernameforserver@server.tld "cat > /destinationDir/filename"
Real World:
cat $HOME/.ssh/id_rsa.pub | ssh root@irc.9unk0r.com "cat > /tmp/id_rsa.pub"

Stupid nix trix: Finger me write, how to talk to someone on a diffrent tty in *nix
You can communicate to other users on your *nix box using write. While at the command prompt you can type:
$write username
Where username is the name of the user, such as root or bsdpunk.
If multiple of the same user are logged in you can specify the tty you want to use.
Use the finger command to find out what tty the other user is on.
$finger
Under finger in a bsd enviroment you will see something like p4 under tty.
$write username tty
The username may be root or bsdpunk or something and the tty if as listed above will be ttyp4.

Quagga Routing software
Quagga is a really interesting routing software suite that emulates a cisco interface for routing on a *nix box. Now, I am not going to start throwing out my ciscos or anything, but this software seems fairly mature, and considering the cost of a cisco over a cheap computer, with FreeBSD and Quagga on it, I could see a real reason to use it. Quagga is opensource(GPL). So why is this interesting. So why would you care? Well with Quagga being on *nix platforms, you know and love you can do things like run tcpdump, or other tools you are already familiar with. Maybe you need QOS or maybe your room mates torrents are driving you crazy from stealing all the bandwidth. Perhaps you just want to become more familiar with routing, or you want to use a real firewall*.
pf.conf can do routing and nat, all on it's own as well.

Poor man's firewall ( debian )
This will work on must linux based systems I imagine. It is blocking an IP, by routing all responses through 127.0.0.1. So instead of sending the response packets it just eats them. This is done by adding a static route which directs the traffic no where.
route add -host 1.1.1.1 netmask 0.0.0.0 lo
Ok so in this example, replace 1.1.1.1 with the offending IP. You can do the same thing with FreeBSD but it's a little different and IMHO makes more sense. I will post that solution later.
This is a quick and dirty solution...never use this as a permanent firewall.

"the hacker operating system, 'Lunix'"(sic)
Some people are just so crazy or just wrong, it's entertaining. This guy is ranting about how opensource is the reason for, well I guess, malicious computing. And claims that open source doesn't produce anything worth having. Does he know he is hosted on an Apache server? Good stuff though, read it and have a laugh.

XandrOS eeePC
Ok so I went back to xandros on my eeePC. I wasn't getting the performance I wanted out of eeeXubuntu. I was having difficulties with wireless signals, and I think the battery life seem stunted. I don't like the lack of software for xandros however I will defiantly be looking into getting under the hood. Ok enough complaining.
Xandros just works, it's very nice and smooth. I don't know how to change the background yet which disappoints me but youtube runs like a champ(unlike on eeeXubuntu). Hmm...still not ready to take the BSD plunge yet.

Library of congress
I saw an article on boingboing.net today about how the library of congress was donated a value of 3 million dollars in products and services from Microsoft and in exchange they will have vista kiosks. Link
I was wondering, why isn't there a venue in which non-profits, and government agencies, etc..can ask for help from open source/*nix. I am thinking of opening a forum specifically so that people with the skills who want to donate their time and people who need functioning computers, websites, etc can help each other out. If you guys have an opinion or a better idea for a venue for this I will be opening a forum topic at 9unkz0r.com/forums under the Lounge/ Off topic section.
